The business had rightly focused on GTM guidelines to satisfy increasingly sophisticated client integration needs - which is a fundamental – there was a missing link about how to then realise innovation outcomes. Innovation will not happen as a direct outcome of integration. Two critical outcomes had been conflated that needed to be tackled in parallel.

Release
The meaning of innovation had been lost in a sea of slides. It was time to reclaim it. Working alongside the ELT and SLT to align the needs and perspectives across the gamut of capabilities with the strongest client needs found in VOC, a narrative formed. Ensuring that the global proposition was not treated as nice-to-have and innovation meant helping clients find their competitive edge.

Retrain
Alongside the narrative, emphasis was placed on innovation architecture and systems. Existing systems were all traditional, sequential, waterfall. As a champion for innovation and openness, rather than creating more bespoke integration processes, a clear recommendation was for the ELT to select proven systems like the double diamond to drive integration and innovation outcomes.

Despite claiming innovation as its mission, there was limited definition or articulation of “innovation” and this disconnected the business narrative from a set of driving problems relating to innovation outcomes.
Many layers of inspiration messaging existed that when used together were distracting from the mission and from needs expressed by clients in the company’s own VOC research.
